每年大約會有三至五個颱風在七月和八月侵襲台灣。
颱風挾帶著強烈風勢與豐沛雨量，

看懂英文新聞的颱風報導！
學習前，先來看看颱風和颶風的威力吧！
颱風和颶風的威力-超級颶風和颱風 (Super Hurricanes and Typhoons)
颱風的英文是什麼？新聞都怎麼報導動向？
1.「昌鴻颱風逼近台灣，這週登陸」。這句英文怎麼說呢？
Typhoon Chan-Hom is approaching Taiwan and will arrive this week.
approach這個字可以當動詞和名詞，有接近和靠近的意思。例句如下：
The cat cautiously approached the bush.
那隻貓小心翼翼地靠近灌木叢。
Snow announced the approach of winter.
雪宣告了冬季的來臨。
2. 再來我們會先關心颱風的位置目前是在哪？距離我們多遠？
「颱風距離本島東南方大約兩千公里遠，以每小時32公里的速度朝北移動。」這句英文怎麼說呢？
Chan-Hom is centered some 2,000 kilometers east-southeast of the island,
moving at a speed of 32 kilometers per hour in a northerly direction.
颱風的位置以颱風眼為準，颱風眼的英文是 the eye of the storm。句子中的 some 不是ㄧ些的意思，放在數字前面變成「大約」的意思。英文裡的方位，要用 (to the) 方位 + of + 地名 的句型，因此台南位在台中的南方，就是 Tainan is located (to the) south of Taichung。
朝向東、西、南、北方向前進可用 in a easterly, westerly, southerly, northerly direction.
3. 颱風來臨時，「中央氣象局會發佈海上或陸上颱風警報」。那英文該怎麼說呢？
The Central Weather Bureau will issue a sea warning for the typhoon
between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
bureau 在英文裡有政府機構的「局、司、署、處」的意思。我們常聽到 FBI，即 Federal Bureau of Investigation，就是所謂的聯邦調查局。Issue當動詞時，有發佈和發行的意思，例句如
The post office issued the stamp last week.
郵局於上周發行郵票。
而 a sea/ land warning 就是海上和陸上颱風警報。
4. 颱風來臨前，「颱風強度將持續增加，對本島造成威脅。氣象局預測颱風將會橫掃台灣北部水域」
The intensity of Chan-Hom will continue to increase and pose a threat to the island.
The bureau predicted that Chan-Hom will sweep through waters north of Taiwan.
颱風的強度用 intensity 這個單字。也可用來指思想、情感、活動等的強烈，例句如：
The poem showed great intensity of feeling.
這首詩表現出強烈的感情。
pose a threat to 意思是「對….造成威脅」。要特別注意的是 waters 水域，要加上 s！
5. 我們也常聽到氣象主播說：「颱風挾帶強風豪雨。」那「挾帶」在英文裡要如何說呢？
The typhoon is packing sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 250.
英文字 pack 當名詞是包裹或背包的意思，但他也可以當作動詞用，有裝入包裹、裝箱之意。而這邊是挾帶的意思。
gust 不同於 wind，原是指一陣強風或一陣突發，在颱風的報導裡為「最大瞬間陣風」。
6. 在強風暴雨之下，學生和上班族最關心的就是有沒有停止上班上課。那們這句話「隨著颱風到來，北中台所有地區今日停止上班上課。」要怎麼用英文表達呢？
With the storm, all of northern and central Taiwan has called off school and work.
call 是我們熟知的打電話，但是動詞片語 call off 卻是取消、停止進行的意思。call off school and work 就是停止上班上課。
7. 最後颱風過境，颱風警報解除，要怎麼說這句「中央氣象局確認颱風不再籠罩本島，將會解除颱風警報。」呢？
The CWB will lift the warning for the typhoon after determining that Chan-Hom’s radius will not cover Taiwan.
lift 原本是舉起或抬起的意思，在這邊是指「解除…禁令」。比如說解除髮禁 lift the hair ban。 Radius 是指颱風半徑範圍，cover 就是覆蓋。
