今天我們要來看的是生活中常常用到，卻總是搞不太清楚誰是誰的六個-pire 字尾的單字，準備好了嗎？ Let’s GO!
Aspire：To have a great ambition and ultimate goal; desire strongly
表示對某件事物非常有熱情，極端渴望的意思
同義詞：yearn / long / desire
VT 告訴你：這幾個單字後面都可以接上 to V，表示「很想去做某件事」。或是接上 for sth.，表示「對某項事物有極大的熱情、嚮往或渴望」。
Many students study very hard, aspiring to enter a good university.
很多學生很用功念書，希望能進入好的大學就讀。The boy aspires to be a dancer.
這個男孩渴望將來能成為一位舞者。I aspire to learn all the words with the root “pire.”
我好想把這些有”pire”的字都學會喔！
Conspire：To secretly plan with someone to do something illegal
表示和其他人共同秘密計畫做一些「非法、不好」的事
同義詞：plot / scheme
VT 告訴你：這三個字都可以加上 with 和 against 表示「和某些人一起密謀策畫某件事」。也可以加上 to V 表示「暗中計畫去做某件事」
VT 再告訴你一個小秘密：con- 這個字首有「一起、共同」的意思，所以 conspire 必須得是和其他人一起，「自己來」就不算喔！關於 con- 字首的更多單字會在之後的文章中介紹，千萬別錯過！
They were accused of conspiring against the government.
他們被指控陰謀推翻政府。The student conspired with some of his friends to falsify the test grade.
這個學生和他的一些朋友正密謀討論要偽造考試成績。

Expire：To come to an end; to run out
表示期限到期、租約中止的意思，也可以指吐氣的動作，
有時也代稱死亡、斷氣。帶有一種”結束”的概念
同義詞：terminate / cease, (做死亡用) perish/ die
VT 告訴你：字首 ex- 有「向外、出去」的意思，因此 expire 就是「讓氣出去」，也就是吐氣，而想當然，有吐氣就有吸氣，你可以先想想看「吸氣」要怎麼說。

The lease of my dorm will expire at the end of the year.
我的學校宿舍的租約將在今年年底到期。
Inspire：To encourage someone by making them feel confident and eager to do something; To make someone have a particular feeling or react in a particular way
表示激勵某人去做某件事，或是激起、喚醒某人的某些想法、感情等等，
也可以當作「吸氣」來用喔～
同義詞：prompt / encourage/ motivate/ stimulate
VT 告訴你：還記得剛剛提到的 expire 是吐氣嗎？而 inspire 中的 in- 字首就是用來表示「進入、在…之內」的意思喔，所以 inspire, expire 誰是吸氣、誰是吐氣就很容易記得了吧！
The CEO’s speech inspired the team and they are willing to work harder.
這位執行長的演講激勵了團隊，讓他們願意更加倍努力工作。

Perspire：To excrete perspiration through the pores (毛孔) of the skin
會從皮膚的毛孔流東西出來？當然是流汗啊！
同義詞：sweat
VT 告訴你：perspire 的名詞形式是 perspiration，指的就是汗水，而 sweat 則是本身就可以當作名詞 (汗水)和動詞 (流汗) 來使用囉！
Success is 99 percent perspiration and 1 percent inspiration.
成功來自於百分之九十九的努力和百分之一的聰明才智。Jack is playing badminton, and he is perspiring heavily.
Jack正在打羽球，而且他流了很多汗。
Respire：To inhale and exhale/ To breathe
inhale 和 exhale 其實也分別代表了吸氣和吐氣，而 re- 這個字首有「一再、重複」的意思，連續不斷的吸氣吐氣，那就是呼吸。
同義詞：breathe
VT 告訴你：比較常被使用到的呼吸是 breathe ，而名詞型態則是 breath，差了一個 e，可別搞錯囉。而 respire 則是比較學術性的用法，一般在生物相關期刊或是論文上比較常見喔！
That cat is still respiring, so we know that it is alive.
那隻貓還在呼吸，所以我們知道牠還活著。
